Hello P-p-p-p-pet students! Here are the answers to the texts I gave you, like I promised. I have done them in a different colour for each text, so I hope it's clear. Any problems, let me know on the blog. Have fun!!!!!
Reading Part 1. Let’s shop! Unit 3. p.15
Exam tip for reading part one:
- Imagine where you would see the text: in a shop? in a school?....
- Underline the key words in the text and in the question.
- Cross out the options which are not possible before you choose the correct one.
- Watch out for ‘tricky words’!
Learn any new vocabulary that you come across.
1) B. Customers must enter through a different door.( DOOR OUT OF ORDER means the door doesn’t work)
2)A. You shouldn’t come here unless you are bringing something back. ( A refund is when you ask for your money back for an item you don’t want and a returned item is the item which you want to give back.)
3.C. Simon is telling his grandma how popular his scarf is. (He doesn’t ask his grandmother to make any more, he just says his friends want one.
4. B. The assistants can tell you whether they have any other sizes available.( This is a notice in a shop. If you don’t see your size ‘on display’ means if you can’t find your size on the rail or shelves in the shop, the assistant will look in the store-room for it.
5.C. Molly would like to borrow something from Jackie.( Could I wear your red dress?)
Reading part 5. Unit 4 p 17 The text about Steven Spielberg and the photo of E.T.
The best way to practise for this part of the exam is to read a lot in English!!
Exam tips:
1) Always read the whole text first.
2) Try and imagine what the missing word is going to be before you look at the options.
3) Read each option in the sentence to see which sounds the best.
Learn any new vocabulary that you come across.
1B. Ever ( we use ever with superlatives, e.e. the best book ever)
2C. Although (‘although’ is like ‘but’ at the beginning of a sentence, ‘but’ comes in the middle. ‘He came from a loving family but he didn’t do well at school. ‘Even’ is a synonym of ‘although’ and ‘though’must be followed be ‘though’: Even though he was.....‘Despite’ must be followed by a noun: despite the fact that he came.....)
3A. do (The expression is to do well or do badly)
4D found (The expression is to find something difficult or easy)
5B because (to explain the reason for something. So explains result....I was cold so I put on my coat. While means ‘mientras, if is for possibility.)
6D. around. (the expression is to move around)
7C trips. (trips are short journeys, and later in the sentence they say ‘other family events’. An event takes place over a short period.
8A. over (over in this sense means ‘more than’)
9A. complicated
10C. show (the expression is to show a film)

- Underline the key words in each of the true/false sentences
- Underline the part in the text which refers to the true/false sentence. Double-check the sentence and the part in the text before you decide.
- Watch out for ‘tricky words’!
Learn any new vocabulary that you come across.
1C through (you walk over the mountains, down a mountain down a road on a road but through the countryside)
2.D journey ( travel is a verb - ‘to travel’ and you need a noun here - ‘a journey’. Drive is only for cars, not donkeys. Way...bleuch!!) 3
3.B Since ( Since then....‘then’ is a point in time, ‘for’ is for a period of time. After _ after that time and from - from that time on)
4.A accompany ( the only one that doesn’t need a preposition after it: stay with, attend to, keep with
5.C handle (the only one that doesn’t need a preposition after it: care for, deal with, sort out)
6.D were ( 2nd conditional: if they were....the walkers would....)
7B which (if in doubt between which and that, always put which.)
8.B time ( ‘moment’ is too short, ‘age’ is too long, ‘on’ the occasion)
9.B available (available means disponible)
- B collect (‘Pick’ needs the preposition ‘up’, ‘bring’ is traer, but they need to take the walkers and donkeys away, ‘save’ is too dramatic).

Reading Part 3 Unit 8. p 33. (The one with the cruise liner.)
In this test you have to decide if the statements are true or false. The sentences follow the same order as the text.
The best way to practise for this part of the exam is to read a lot in English!!

- B. ( I wish there’d been somewhere for people my age to hang out’. Hang out means to meet up and chat.)
- A. (Josh’s parents had almost decided they’d never take their family on a cruise again.)
- B. ( ‘As a result of requests by parents.’ A request is not a complaint.)
- A. ( I was worried it’d be boring, but I have to admit the ruins were quite cool. ‘cool’ here means fun/interesting)
- B. ( although lots of teenagers on board didn’t seem to want to try it.)
- B. ( my sister immediately managed to get all the way up it, so I just had to do the same.)
9) B. (But I met up with other girls, and we went shopping and visited all the cafés with our mums)
- A. (We were happy just doing what we wanted instead of having stuff provided)
